Journey
St Balikuddembe Mitala Maria, a distinguished Ugandan music ensemble, originated in the vibrant environment of St Balikuddembe Senior Secondary School in Mitala-Maria, Mpigi District. Founded by Charles Ssebunnya in the early 1980s, the group's rise from a small school choir to a renowned national ensemble is a story of passion and cultural perseverance. Named after Uganda's first Catholic martyr, the ensemble draws upon deep spiritual and cultural roots, reflecting the rich heritage of the Mitala-Maria parish, a community established in 1899 by the White Fathers. Through disciplined training, the choir has mastered a blend of gospel, kadongo-kamu, and traditional Ugandan music, elevating their performances to national stature. Known for their songs “Ntambula Ngaludde” and “Kyenina,” St Balikuddembe Mitala Maria has performed at prestigious venues such as the State House and has been featured on radio stations like CBS FM. Their success has not only amplified their reputation but also transformed the school's image into a cultural hub, highlighting the enchanting power of music as a tool for education, cultural identity, and communal unity.
